Empecemos por el principio: tipografía para imprimir y para la web

Para nuestros programas de diseño impresos, usamos:

TrueType y OpenType: estos formatos contienen los contornos de las letras descritos matemáticamente, junto con sus medidas y espacios. Esa información permite reproducir la misma letra en distintos tamaños y resoluciones:

En pantalla, el sistema transforma los contornos en píxeles.
Para imprimir, el sistema procesa esos contornos a la resolución del equipo de salida.

Por eso, una misma fuente moderna puede servir tanto para pantalla como para impresión.

Pero la pantalla no es internet. Para internet, habitualmente nuestro navegador usa:

WOFF2: Web Open Font Format 2 o «Formato abierto de fuentes para la web, versión 2». Es un formato que comprime los datos de una fuente para que pese menos y se descargue más rápido. El dispositivo los interpreta y convierte las letras en píxeles. Ese proceso se llama rasterización.

Por esta razón, tener la fuente instalada en nuestra computadora no hace que esté disponible en los dispositivos de los visitantes. Pero aquí no termina la historia.

El archivo de diseño y la página web trabajan de forma distinta

En Illustrator, CorelDRAW o InDesign, el programa muestra el texto con las fuentes disponibles en tu computadora. Al preparar una pieza final para impresión, puedes entregar un PDF con las fuentes incrustadas o convertir el texto en contornos, según lo que requiera la imprenta. Así, la apariencia de esa pieza queda definida en el archivo que se va a imprimir.

Una página web, en cambio, no llega al visitante como una hoja, un flyer o un brochure terminado. El navegador recibe el texto y las instrucciones de diseño, y debe mostrarlo en el dispositivo de cada persona. La fuente instalada en tu computadora no viaja automáticamente con la página. Si el navegador no dispone de ella y el sitio no le proporciona un archivo de fuente, utilizará otra.

Imagina que haces un encabezado en tu computadora y eliges una letra por la forma de su «a» y su «g». Tú ves exactamente lo que diseñaste. Ahora ponte en el lugar de alguien que abre la página desde su teléfono: ese teléfono no tiene por qué tener instalada la misma fuente. El encabezado podría verse con otra letra, ocupar más espacio y cambiar los saltos de línea.

¿Qué necesita una fuente para funcionar en la web?

Para que el navegador muestre una tipografía concreta, el sitio debe indicarle de dónde obtenerla. Normalmente se hace mediante estilos CSS que enlazan un archivo de fuente preparado para su distribución en la web; WOFF2 es uno de los formatos habituales para ello. También se indica una fuente de respaldo para el caso en que la principal no cargue.

Ahí está la diferencia técnica principal: un archivo de fuente que funciona en tu programa de diseño no queda incorporado a una web por escribir su nombre en el diseño. El navegador necesita poder acceder al archivo adecuado y cargarlo. Además, cada variante que utilices —por ejemplo, regular o negrita— debe estar disponible para ese uso.

Esto no quiere decir que exista una barrera absoluta entre «fuentes para imprimir» y «fuentes para web». Una misma familia tipográfica puede tener archivos y usos para ambos medios. Pero al pasar del diseño impreso al digital hay que resolver cómo se entregará la fuente al navegador del usuario. Tenerla instalada para diseñar no resuelve esta parte.

Tipografía para web: buscar una equivalencia con criterio

En muchos proyectos, la solución más práctica es buscar una fuente disponible para web que conserve la intención del diseño original. Yo suelo explorar Google Fonts. Eso fue lo que hice cuando surgió la petición del cliente: él pedía usar Avant Garde y encontramos en Poppins una alternativa apropiada para aquel sitio.

Pero elegir una equivalencia no significa quedarse con la primera letra que se parece. Hay que observar qué hacía atractiva a la fuente inicial: ¿su geometría?, ¿sus proporciones?, ¿la amplitud de sus caracteres?, ¿su presencia en los titulares? Después hay que probar a la candidata en el contenido real: títulos, párrafos, botones y menús.

Una fuente puede recordar mucho a otra cuando escribimos una sola palabra en grande y comportarse de manera muy distinta en una página completa. Por eso también reviso cómo se leen los textos en un teléfono, una tableta y una pantalla de escritorio. La pregunta útil no es solo «¿se parece?», sino «¿funciona para las personas que van a leerla?».

¿Y si el diseño también se usará en una app?

En una aplicación ocurre algo parecido: mostrar una fuente en una maqueta no garantiza que aparezca en el producto terminado. El equipo que desarrolla la app debe tener acceso a los archivos necesarios e integrarlos de acuerdo con la plataforma utilizada. Luego hay que comprobar su lectura en las pantallas y tamaños donde aparecerá.

Piensa, por ejemplo, en el nombre de una sección que cabe sin problema en tu diseño, pero se corta dentro de un botón en un teléfono pequeño. A veces la mejor decisión es ajustar tamaños y espacios; otras veces, escoger una fuente con proporciones más adecuadas. La tipografía participa en la experiencia de uso, no solo en la apariencia de la maqueta.

OK, Carlos, pero el cliente insiste: ¿qué hacemos?

Sí, eso puede pasar. Usualmente existen equivalentes visuales en los formatos ya descritos con anterioridad; por ejemplo: para Helvetica se puede usar Roboto, para Futura una opción es Jost, y podemos seguir con una lista larguísima. Si la equivalencia es la correcta, en mi experiencia el cliente la acepta.

Pero también es cierto que muchas fuentes TrueType y OpenType pueden tener versiones WOFF2, y aquí te respondo directamente desde mi experiencia como diseñador web especializado en WordPress.

Algunas fuentes requieren una licencia de pago para su uso web; otras tienen licencias gratuitas. Alojar la fuente en tu servidor puede implicar hacer modificaciones en el CSS del tema y, según el tema o constructor que uses, existe la posibilidad de necesitar un tema hijo.

Esto no te garantiza que aparezca en todos los dispositivos. Al modificar los CSS y si realizas un tema hijo, yo recomendaría estar atento a las actualizaciones, por la aparición de posibles errores.

También pueden aparecer incompatibilidades con plugins instalados y lo que los clientes no soportan: que la página cargue más lento, lo cual es una posibilidad.

Todo esto dependerá de que el sitio web tenga la optimización correcta. Además, esto representa más trabajo para el diseñador y un costo que el cliente tiene que pagar.

Muchas veces me piden sitios minimalistas, pero el concepto de «menos es más» también se aplica al backend.

Diseñar para la web también es saber traducir una idea

Cuando un cliente o un diseñador propone una letra específica, vale la pena escuchar qué le gusta de ella antes de buscar alternativas, porque la tipografía es un elemento de lo que se quiere transmitir como parte de un todo. Así podemos conservar la intención visual aunque cambie la fuente. Fue lo que ocurrió recientemente, y es una situación que puede repetirse con muchas otras familias tipográficas.

La próxima vez que una letra se vea perfecta en tu programa de diseño, hazte una pregunta sencilla: ¿cómo llegará esa letra a la pantalla de otra persona? Pensar en eso desde el comienzo ayuda a tomar mejores decisiones y a explicar con claridad por qué, a veces, la mejor solución es encontrar una equivalencia.

Agentes de inteligencia artificial: ¿con qué se come eso?

Agentes de inteligencia artificial. Si usted trabaja en marketing, tiene un emprendimiento o simplemente está tratando de entender qué demonios está pasando con la inteligencia artificial, probablemente ya escuchó esta expresión varias veces.

Y posiblemente también escuchó frases como: “Necesitamos implementar un agente de IA”, “hay que automatizar esto con inteligencia artificial” o “nuestra empresa necesita agentes inteligentes”.

El problema es que muchas veces quien pronuncia esas frases tampoco sabe exactamente qué significan.

Es como si de repente todo el mundo estuviera hablando de una nueva herramienta maravillosa, pero nadie se hubiera detenido a preguntar: ¿qué hace?, ¿para qué sirve?, ¿cuánto cuesta?, ¿cómo se implementa y, sobre todo, qué problema va a resolver?

Así que vamos a comenzar por lo básico.

Y sí, el título tiene una razón de ser. En mí país, cuando uno pregunta “¿con qué se come eso?”, no necesariamente está hablando de comida. Es una manera bastante gráfica de decir: “Explícame qué es eso y para qué sirve”.

Y eso es exactamente lo que vamos a hacer aquí.

¿Qué son los agentes de inteligencia artificial?

Un agente de inteligencia artificial es, en términos sencillos, un sistema que utiliza inteligencia artificial para alcanzar un objetivo, tomar decisiones dentro de ciertos límites y ejecutar una serie de acciones para conseguirlo.

La diferencia importante está precisamente en la palabra acciones.

Un chatbot tradicional puede responder una pregunta.

Un modelo de inteligencia artificial puede escribir un texto, analizar información, generar una imagen o ayudarte a pensar una estrategia.

Un agente de inteligencia artificial, en cambio, puede recibir un objetivo y encargarse de una secuencia de tareas para intentar alcanzarlo.

Google Cloud define los agentes de IA como sistemas de software que utilizan inteligencia artificial para perseguir objetivos y completar tareas en nombre del usuario, incorporando capacidades como razonamiento, planificación, memoria y cierto grado de autonomía.

Dicho de una manera todavía más sencilla: la IA responde. El agente utiliza esa inteligencia para actuar.

Y aquí aparece una diferencia fundamental.

Si yo le digo a ChatGPT:

“Escríbeme cinco publicaciones para LinkedIn sobre marketing.”

ChatGPT genera las publicaciones.

Pero si construyo un sistema que:

Busca oportunidades de negocio.
Analiza cuáles coinciden con mi perfil de servicios.
Extrae información relevante.
Compara esa información con mis capacidades.
Prepara una propuesta.
Guarda la información.
Presenta las oportunidades seleccionadas.
Espera mi aprobación.
Y posteriormente ejecuta determinadas acciones.

Ya estamos hablando de algo mucho más cercano a un agente de IA.

Agentes de IA: de responder preguntas a ejecutar tareas

Esta evolución es una de las razones por las que el concepto está creciendo tan rápidamente.

Según una encuesta global de McKinsey publicada en 2025, el 62 % de las organizaciones consultadas ya estaban experimentando con agentes de IA o escalando su utilización. Sin embargo, la mayoría todavía se encontraba en etapas relativamente tempranas de implementación.

Es decir, no estamos ante una tecnología completamente madura y establecida en todas las empresas.

Estamos en una etapa de experimentación.

Y eso explica también parte del ruido que existe alrededor del tema.

¿Para qué usamos realmente la inteligencia artificial?

Antes de hablar de agentes, vale la pena mirar cómo utilizamos actualmente herramientas como ChatGPT.

Un estudio de OpenAI basado en el análisis de 1,5 millones de conversaciones encontró que aproximadamente tres cuartas partes de las conversaciones de los usuarios estaban relacionadas con tres grandes categorías: orientación práctica, búsqueda de información y escritura.

Y esto resulta bastante interesante porque refleja algo que vemos todos los días.

Agentes de IA para obtener información y aprender

Uno de los usos más frecuentes consiste simplemente en preguntar.

“Explícame esto.”

“¿Cómo funciona aquello?”

“¿Cuál es la diferencia entre SEO y SEM?”

“¿Cómo puedo mejorar mi estrategia de marketing?”

“Explícame este contrato.”

“¿Qué significa este concepto?”

La inteligencia artificial se ha convertido en una especie de asistente de consulta permanente.

Y esto tiene una enorme importancia para emprendedores y profesionales porque reduce el tiempo necesario para comenzar a investigar un tema.

Pero hay una advertencia: obtener información rápidamente no significa automáticamente obtener información correcta.

Aquí entra nuevamente el criterio humano.

Agentes de IA para escribir, crear y producir

El segundo gran territorio es la creación: textos para redes sociales, correos electrónicos, artículos, guiones, ideas publicitarias, propuestas comerciales, descripciones de productos, traducciones, resúmenes y muchas otras tareas.

En marketing, esto ha producido una verdadera explosión, la IA ha reducido considerablemente el tiempo necesario para producir determinados tipos de contenido.

Pero producir más contenido no significa necesariamente producir mejor marketing.

Ese detalle parece pequeño, pero es gigantesco.

Agentes de IA para planificar y ejecutar tareas

El tercer territorio es probablemente el que más nos interesa cuando hablamos de agentes.

La IA puede ayudarnos a organizar proyectos, crear planes, analizar información, estructurar procesos y tomar decisiones dentro de un contexto determinado.

Aquí comienza el salto desde:

“Haz esto por mí.”

hacia:

“Encárgate de este proceso y avanza hasta alcanzar este objetivo.”

Y ahí es donde aparecen los agentes.

¿Cómo se convierte ChatGPT en un agente de inteligencia artificial?

Aquí hay una confusión muy común. ChatGPT, Claude o Gemini no son necesariamente “el agente” que hace todo por arte de magia; son modelos y plataformas de inteligencia artificial que pueden formar parte de un sistema de agentes de IA.

Podemos pensar en ellos como el cerebro.

Pero un cerebro necesita sentidos, memoria, herramientas y la capacidad de interactuar con el mundo.

Un agente normalmente necesita varios elementos:

Un objetivo: qué queremos conseguir.
Instrucciones: cómo debe comportarse.
Un modelo de IA: por ejemplo, un modelo de OpenAI, Anthropic o Google.
Información: documentos, bases de datos, páginas web, hojas de cálculo, etc.
Memoria o contexto: información que necesita conservar durante el proceso.
Herramientas: aplicaciones y servicios con los que puede interactuar.
Un flujo de trabajo: la secuencia lógica que conecta todas esas piezas.
Reglas y límites: qué puede y qué no puede hacer.
Supervisión humana: especialmente cuando las acciones tienen consecuencias importantes.

Por eso, construir un agente puede implicar bastante más que abrir ChatGPT y escribir un buen prompt.

¿Necesito saber programar para crear un agente de IA?

Esta es otra pregunta que aparece rápidamente cuando uno comienza a investigar sobre agentes.

La respuesta corta es: no necesariamente, pero los conocimientos técnicos ayudan muchísimo.

Actualmente existen plataformas no-code y low-code que permiten construir determinados agentes y automatizaciones mediante interfaces visuales, conectando aplicaciones y servicios sin tener que programar todo desde cero.

Sin embargo, cuando el proyecto se vuelve más complejo, es posible que necesitemos trabajar con APIs, webhooks, JSON, bases de datos, autenticación o pequeños fragmentos de código.

Y aquí aprendí otra cosa importante mientras experimentaba con estos sistemas:

No necesariamente tienes que ser programador, pero conviene entender qué está haciendo el código.

Incluso cuando utilizamos herramientas visuales como n8n, puede llegar un momento en el que necesitemos modificar una expresión, interpretar un JSON, conectar una API o solucionar un error técnico.

Por eso, para construir agentes profesionales existen diferentes niveles de conocimiento.

Puedes comenzar utilizando herramientas no-code y luego avanzar hacia plataformas low-code.

Y cuando las necesidades aumentan, puedes incorporar conocimientos de programación o trabajar con un desarrollador.

Lo importante es entender que la inteligencia artificial no elimina la necesidad de conocimientos técnicos; en muchos casos cambia el tipo de conocimiento que necesitamos.

Para un profesional de marketing, diseño o negocios, esto puede significar que no necesitamos convertirnos en programadores, pero sí necesitamos desarrollar suficiente alfabetización tecnológica para entender cómo funcionan las herramientas que estamos utilizando.

Y cuando el proyecto lo requiera, contar con una persona especializada en programación puede ahorrar muchísimo tiempo y evitar errores.

Agentes de IA y flujos de trabajo

Aquí quiero hacer una reflexión personal.

Cuando comencé a investigar este tema, encontré algo que me resultó familiar: muchos agentes funcionan alrededor de flujos de trabajo.

Y esto tiene sentido para quienes hemos trabajado con marketing digital.

Si alguna vez has creado un funnel de ventas, una automatización de email marketing o un proceso de captación de leads, probablemente ya tienes cierta familiaridad con esta lógica:

Entrada → decisión → acción → siguiente paso → resultado.

Por eso, aunque ClickFunnels no es un agente de inteligencia artificial, la experiencia trabajando con funnels puede ayudarte a comprender cómo se estructura un proceso automatizado.

La diferencia es que un funnel tradicional normalmente sigue una lógica mucho más predefinida.

Un agente puede incorporar inteligencia artificial para interpretar información, decidir entre diferentes caminos y adaptar sus acciones al contexto.

En otras palabras:

Un workflow tradicional sigue instrucciones. Un sistema agentic puede utilizar IA para decidir qué hacer dentro de esas instrucciones y objetivos.

Herramientas como n8n están precisamente construyendo ese puente entre inteligencia artificial y automatización. n8n permite conectar modelos de IA con cientos de servicios, incorporar lógica tradicional, herramientas, memoria y puntos de aprobación humana dentro de un mismo flujo.

¿Qué necesito para crear un agente de IA?

Aquí viene la parte que muchas publicaciones sobre inteligencia artificial suelen pasar por alto.

Crear un agente no empieza con:

“Quiero un agente.”

Empieza con:

“Tengo este problema y quiero conseguir este resultado.”

Parece una diferencia semántica.

No lo es.

Agentes de IA necesitan un objetivo concreto

Supongamos que tienes una empresa y dices:

“Quiero un agente de marketing.”

Eso no es suficiente.

¿Qué debería hacer?

¿Buscar clientes?

¿Responder emails?

¿Crear contenido?

¿Analizar competidores?

¿Encontrar oportunidades de venta?

¿Preparar campañas?

¿Analizar métricas?

¿Actualizar una base de datos?

¿Todo lo anterior?

Si intentamos hacer todo al mismo tiempo, probablemente terminaremos construyendo una criatura digital bastante complicada que hace muchas cosas regulares sin resultados claros o información poco definida.

Es mucho mejor comenzar con un problema específico.

Por ejemplo:

“Quiero identificar empresas que podrían necesitar servicios de diseño web y marketing, analizar cuáles son relevantes y organizar las oportunidades para desarrollar una estrategia comercial.”

Eso sí es un objetivo.

Y aquí es donde mi propia experiencia reciente experimentando con agentes me ha servido para entender mejor el proceso.

Mi experiencia creando agentes de IA para generar oportunidades de negocio

Yo también soy nuevo en experimentar con agentes de inteligencia artificial.

Actualmente estoy explorando cómo implementar agentes para diferentes acciones y procesos relacionados con mi trabajo y con algunos proyectos para clientes.

Uno de los usos que estoy investigando está relacionado con la identificación de nuevas oportunidades de negocio y generación de leads a través de LinkedIn.

La idea no es simplemente buscar contactos, sino desarrollar un proceso que permita identificar empresas y profesionales que puedan necesitar servicios de diseño gráfico, diseño web, marketing y consultoría, analizar sus necesidades y organizar esa información para posteriormente desarrollar una estrategia de contacto.

Y aquí descubrí algo importante.

Para construir un agente de este tipo no basta con decirle a ChatGPT:

“Busca clientes por mí.”

Necesitamos construir un sistema alrededor de la inteligencia artificial.

En ese proceso pueden intervenir herramientas como Google Drive, documentos, almacenamiento de información, automatización con n8n y otras tecnologías que permiten conectar diferentes partes del proceso.

La inteligencia artificial puede analizar la información, pero necesita herramientas que le permitan acceder a ella, organizarla y, dependiendo del caso, ejecutar determinadas acciones.

Por eso, cuando comenzamos a construir un agente, la pregunta no debería ser solamente qué modelo de IA vamos a utilizar.

También debemos preguntarnos:

¿Con qué herramientas va a trabajar? ¿Qué información necesita? ¿Dónde se almacenará? ¿Qué acciones podrá ejecutar? ¿Y qué nivel de supervisión humana vamos a mantener?

¿Por qué necesitamos tantas herramientas para crear un agente?

Aquí aparece una pregunta muy lógica:

¿Por qué necesito tantas cosas si tengo ChatGPT?

Porque ChatGPT (o Gemini, o Claude) puede ser una parte fundamental del sistema, pero no necesariamente es todo el sistema.

Imaginemos nuevamente un agente para identificar oportunidades de negocio.

La inteligencia artificial puede analizar una empresa o una oportunidad.

Pero para hacerlo de manera automatizada, necesitamos conseguir esa información.

Después necesitamos guardarla.

Después compararla con nuestros servicios.

Después decidir si es relevante.

Después generar determinada información.

Después quizá guardar el resultado.

Y en algunos casos necesitaríamos interactuar con otras aplicaciones.

Ese conjunto de conexiones es lo que convierte una conversación con IA en un proceso automatizado mucho más completo.

La IA aporta inteligencia.
Las herramientas aportan acceso.
El workflow aporta estructura.

Y el objetivo determina hacia dónde vamos.

Agentes de IA no significan “automatizarlo todo”

Esta es probablemente una de las reflexiones más importantes de todo este artículo.

Existe una tendencia a pensar que mientras más automatización tengamos, mejor.

No necesariamente.

Imaginemos que automatizamos una estrategia de marketing equivocada.

Ahora tendremos una estrategia equivocada funcionando 24 horas al día.

Eso no es eficiencia, eso es equivocarse con mayor velocidad.

Por eso considero que una de las primeras preguntas antes de construir un agente debería ser:

¿Qué estrategia quiero apoyar con este agente?

Si no existe una estrategia clara, el agente puede ser técnicamente impresionante y comercialmente inútil.

Puedes tener un Ferrari.

Pero si no sabes a dónde vas, solamente tendrás un Ferrari dando vueltas por la ciudad.

Y eso no es exactamente una estrategia de marketing.

El agente de inteligencia artificial necesita estrategia

Esta es una de las conclusiones a las que he llegado mientras experimento con estas herramientas.

Un agente necesita un objetivo claro, pero ese objetivo debe formar parte de una estrategia.

Por ejemplo:

Objetivo: conseguir nuevos clientes.

Eso todavía es demasiado amplio.

Podríamos convertirlo en:

Objetivo: identificar empresas de Miami que podrían necesitar servicios de diseño gráfico, diseño web o marketing.

Y luego:

Estrategia: identificar empresas dentro de determinados sectores, analizar su presencia digital, detectar oportunidades y preparar información para una posible prospección comercial.

Ahora sí tenemos algo que un sistema puede ayudar a ejecutar.

La diferencia entre ambos planteamientos es enorme.

La inteligencia artificial puede hacer muchas cosas, pero no necesariamente sabe cuál de todas esas cosas debería hacer por tu negocio.

Eso sigue siendo responsabilidad nuestra.

¿Los agentes de IA son gratuitos?

Aquí también hay que quitarle un poco de maquillaje al asunto.

Sí, existen posibilidades gratuitas para comenzar a experimentar.

Puedes utilizar versiones gratuitas de determinadas plataformas, herramientas de automatización con opciones gratuitas y diferentes servicios que permiten crear prototipos sin pagar inicialmente.

Pero eso no significa que todo el ecosistema de agentes de IA sea gratuito.

A medida que aumenta la cantidad de tareas, las automatizaciones, el número de consultas, el almacenamiento, las integraciones y la necesidad de modelos más capaces, aparecen costos.

Y las cuentas pagas pueden ofrecer acceso a modelos más potentes, mayores límites, mejores herramientas o funciones adicionales.

Por eso mi recomendación es: Primero valida el concepto y después invierte.

No pagues cinco plataformas porque viste cinco videos en YouTube diciendo que “necesitas estas cinco herramientas”.

Primero demuestra que el agente resuelve un problema real.

Después, optimiza el sistema y finalmente calcula cuánto te cuesta y cuánto valor produce.

ChatGPT, Claude y Gemini: ¿cuál es mejor?

Aquí entramos en un terreno peligroso porque la respuesta sencilla sería:

“El mío.”

Pero esa respuesta no sería muy útil.

ChatGPT, Claude y Gemini son plataformas y modelos que evolucionan rápidamente.

No existe una respuesta permanente a la pregunta de cuál es “el mejor”.

Depende de la tarea.

Una plataforma puede ser especialmente conveniente para determinadas tareas de escritura o análisis. Otra puede tener ventajas para programación, contexto o determinados flujos. Otra puede integrarse de manera especialmente natural con un ecosistema concreto.

Por eso, cuando hablamos de agentes, la pregunta más interesante no debería ser:

“¿Cuál IA es mejor?”

Sino:

“¿Qué combinación de modelo, herramientas, datos y automatización resuelve mejor mi problema?”

Ese cambio de pregunta es fundamental.

Agentes de IA y el futuro del marketing

Aquí es donde el tema comienza a ponerse realmente interesante.

McKinsey estima que los sistemas de IA agentic podrían llegar a intervenir en una parte muy significativa de las actividades actuales de marketing, incluyendo generación de contenido, pruebas de audiencias y planificación de medios. La consultora estima que estos sistemas podrían acelerar determinados procesos de creación y ejecución de campañas entre 10 y 15 veces.

Pero hay que leer estos datos con cuidado.

No significa que dentro de poco el departamento de marketing desaparecerá.

Significa que muchas tareas que actualmente requieren intervención humana podrían comenzar a ejecutarse mediante sistemas automatizados y agentes.

Y esto cambia el papel del profesional, en lugar de pasar todo el día produciendo tareas repetitivas, el profesional puede dedicar más tiempo a:

estrategia;
creatividad;
análisis;
posicionamiento;
investigación;
decisiones;
relaciones con clientes;
construcción de marca.

La IA puede encargarse de una parte creciente del trabajo operativo, pero alguien tiene que decidir qué trabajo vale la pena hacer.

La inteligencia artificial no sustituye el criterio humano

Esta es, para mí, la conclusión más importante. Un agente puede ser muy bueno y:

Puede analizar información.
Puede escribir.
Puede organizar.
Puede comparar.
Puede automatizar.
Puede tomar determinadas decisiones.

Pero eso no significa que debamos entregarle el volante y salir a tomar café. La experiencia humana sigue siendo fundamental.

Necesitamos aplicar:

Criterio, sentido común, experiencia y conocimiento del contexto.

Porque un agente puede ejecutar perfectamente una instrucción incorrecta.

También puede interpretar mal una información.

Puede encontrar un dato incorrecto.

Puede tomar una decisión que técnicamente parece lógica, pero comercialmente no tiene sentido.

Y puede hacerlo mucho más rápido que nosotros. Por eso, en determinados procesos, debemos mantener al humano dentro del circuito.

La pregunta no debería ser:

“¿Cómo elimino al humano?”

Sino:

“¿En qué parte del proceso la inteligencia artificial puede ayudar al humano a trabajar mejor?”

Entonces, ¿con qué se come un agente de inteligencia artificial?

Después de investigar y comenzar a experimentar personalmente con ellos, mi respuesta sería bastante sencilla.

Un agente de inteligencia artificial se “come” con:

objetivos + estrategia + inteligencia artificial + datos + herramientas + automatización + supervisión humana.

Y, en algunos casos, una buena dosis de paciencia.

Porque construir un agente no siempre es tan sencillo como lo presentan algunos videos de redes sociales.

La tecnología está avanzando rápidamente, pero eso no significa que tengamos que correr detrás de cada nueva palabra de moda.

Primero debemos identificar el problema.
Después definir el objetivo.
Luego diseñar la estrategia.

Y solamente después decidir si necesitamos un agente.

Ese orden es importante.

Porque no necesitamos agentes de inteligencia artificial porque estén de moda.

Necesitamos agentes cuando pueden ayudarnos a resolver un problema concreto de una manera mejor, más rápida, más económica o más escalable.

Mi recomendación final sobre los agentes de IA

Si eres emprendedor, profesional de marketing o dueño de una pequeña empresa, mi recomendación es comenzar pequeño.

No intentes construir “el gran agente que manejará toda la empresa”.

Busca primero una tarea repetitiva.

Una tarea que consuma tiempo.

Una tarea que tenga un resultado fácilmente medible.

Y pregúntate:

¿Puede la inteligencia artificial hacer una parte de este proceso?

Si la respuesta es sí, entonces podemos comenzar a diseñar el flujo.

Eso fue precisamente lo que estoy haciendo yo.

Estoy experimentando, aprendiendo y construyendo mis propios agentes para entender no solamente cómo funcionan técnicamente, sino también cómo pueden convertirse en herramientas útiles para marketing, diseño y negocios reales.

Porque una cosa es saber construir un agente.

Y otra muy diferente es saber para qué construirlo.

Y en marketing, esa diferencia puede valer mucho dinero.

Who Was Arcimboldo, and Why Do Some Consider Him the First Surrealist Painter?

Arcimboldo was the first surrealist painter. At least, that has been a reflection that has accompanied me for many years as a visual artist and student of art history. Although Salvador Dalí is traditionally recognized as the greatest representative of Surrealism, every time I look at the extraordinary works of Giuseppe Arcimboldo, I find in them a freedom of imagination, a transformation of reality, and a capacity for visual association that seems to anticipate the ideas of twentieth-century Surrealism by several centuries.

Recently, a student and my wife asked me about this remarkable painter. While discussing his work with them, I found myself reflecting once again on the impact of his art and on an idea that has always fascinated me: Is it possible that Arcimboldo was, long before Dalí, the true precursor of Surrealism?

Of course, this is a personal interpretation. However, art history provides enough evidence to open a fascinating discussion.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo: A Brief Biography

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in Milan around 1527 and died in 1593. He was an Italian painter of the Mannerist period who worked for the Habsburg court, first in Vienna and later in Prague.

Initially, he created more traditional works, including stained-glass designs, tapestries, and religious decorations. However, he achieved lasting fame through a series of extraordinary portraits constructed from fruits, vegetables, flowers, animals, books, and other objects.

These compositions were not simple decorative exercises. At the imperial court, they were considered sophisticated intellectual creations filled with symbolism and references to nature, science, politics, and power.

Arcimboldo’s Most Famous Works

The Four Seasons

Without question, his most famous series is The Four Seasons, in which each human face is composed of elements characteristic of a particular season. Spring is formed from flowers; Summer from fruits and vegetables; Autumn from harvested produce; and Winter from branches, bark, and citrus fruits.

What makes these paintings extraordinary is that each element retains its individual identity while simultaneously contributing to the construction of a human face.

The Four Elements

Another of his major series is The Four Elements, in which Air, Water, Earth, and Fire are represented through the accumulation of birds, marine creatures, land animals, and objects associated with combustion.

Vertumnus

Perhaps one of his most impressive works is Vertumnus, an allegorical portrait of Emperor Rudolf II depicted as the Roman god of vegetation. The face is composed of an intricate combination of fruits, flowers, and vegetables carefully selected for symbolic meaning.

The Remarkable Scientific Accuracy of His Paintings

One of the aspects that fascinates me most about Arcimboldo is that his paintings are not simply fantasies.

When we examine his works closely, we discover an extraordinary power of observation. Every fruit, flower, and vegetable can be clearly identified. Botanists and art historians have noted that many species are represented with remarkable accuracy. In some cases, seasonal produce appears in ways that reinforce the allegorical meaning of each composition.

This precision makes his paintings far more complex than visual curiosities. They create a bridge between art, nature, science, and symbolism.

Was Arcimboldo the First Surrealist Painter?

This is where the debate begins.

From a strictly historical perspective, the answer would be no. Surrealism was an artistic movement officially founded in the twentieth century by André Breton and later developed by artists such as Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Max Ernst.

However, when discussing the visual language of Surrealism, the answer becomes much more intriguing.

The Surrealists themselves deeply admired Arcimboldo. Salvador Dalí even referred to him as a predecessor of Surrealism, and many art historians describe him as a direct forerunner of the movement.

Why?

Because Arcimboldo broke away from conventional representations of reality.
He took ordinary objects and transformed them into something entirely different.
He created images with multiple layers of meaning.
He constructed impossible visual realities that function simultaneously on different interpretive levels.
He challenged the viewer’s immediate sense of logic.
All of these qualities would later become defining characteristics of Surrealism.

My Personal Perspective as an Artist

I have always deeply admired Salvador Dalí. For many years, he was my primary reference within Surrealism.

I have also found surrealist elements in the work of Hieronymus Bosch, especially in his fantastical worlds and unexpected visual associations.

However, when I look at Arcimboldo, I find something different.

It is not simply imagination.

It is the transformation of visible reality into another possible reality.

A pear ceases to be a pear and becomes a nose.

A cluster of grapes becomes hair.

A collection of flowers transforms into a human face.

What fascinates me is that the viewer can perceive both realities simultaneously.

That ability to create a parallel reality using recognizable elements seems to me one of the earliest manifestations of what would later become surrealist thinking.

For that reason, while I acknowledge that Arcimboldo was not historically part of the Surrealist movement, I continue to regard him as one of the first great artists to explore a visual language that anticipated modern Surrealism.

Arcimboldo’s Legacy in Art History

After his death, Arcimboldo’s reputation declined considerably. For centuries, he was viewed largely as a curiosity within Renaissance art.

However, at the beginning of the twentieth century, his work was rediscovered by artists, critics, and historians. The Surrealists recognized a striking affinity between his paintings and their own artistic explorations. Since then, his reputation has continued to grow.

Today, he is considered one of the most original artists of the Renaissance and one of the great precursors of modern fantasy art.

His works can be viewed in major institutions such as the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the Louvre Museum in Paris, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, and various collections throughout Europe and the United States.

Conclusion

More than four centuries after his death, Giuseppe Arcimboldo continues to amaze those who encounter his work for the first time.

His composite portraits challenge perception and combine art and science, humor and symbolism, observation and fantasy. Although Surrealism would officially emerge centuries later, it is difficult not to recognize in his paintings some of the seeds that would later flourish in the works of Dalí, Magritte, and many others.

Perhaps we can never definitively claim that Arcimboldo was the first surrealist painter. Yet we can acknowledge that he opened a door that other artists would walk through centuries later.

That is precisely why his work remains so relevant today.

While these concerns are understandable, the reality is that a logo, on its own, does not have the power to increase sales, automatically attract customers, or resolve business-related issues.

This is where many companies make a significant mistake. They confuse the logo with marketing, sales, or even the company’s entire branding strategy.

A logo can certainly help a company become recognizable, professional, and visually consistent; however, if there are underlying issues with the business strategy, customer service, value proposition, or brand positioning, simply changing the logo will not resolve those difficulties.

In fact, the desire to change a logo often masks a much deeper problem related to the core business strategy.

Therefore, before investing in a new design or a redesign, it is crucial to understand what the true objectives of a logo actually are—and the specific role it plays within a brand.

Branding, Brand, Logo, and Corporate Identity: They Are Not the Same Thing

One of the most commonly misunderstood concepts in the business world is the belief that a “brand” consists solely of its logo.

The reality is that each element serves a distinct function.

What is a Brand?

A brand is the perception that people hold regarding a company. It is the sum total of the experiences, emotions, opinions, and memories associated with a business.

What is Branding?

Branding is the strategic process through which that perception is built and managed. It encompasses positioning, communication, core values, brand personality, and the overall customer experience.

What is Corporate Identity? Corporate identity is the visual representation of a brand. It includes colors, typography, photographic style, graphic applications, stationery, and other visual elements.

What is a logo?

Identify

The primary objective of a logo is to identify a company, product, or service.

It is not designed to sell directly.

Its main function is to enable people to quickly recognize who stands behind a specific communication, product, or experience.

Consider globally renowned brands. When we see their symbol or name, we immediately know who they are without the need for any additional explanation.

A good logo functions as a visual signature.

Differentiate

In increasingly competitive markets, companies need to stand out.

The second major objective of a logo is to help differentiate a company from its competitors.

This does not necessarily mean creating something extravagant or complicated.

Often, differentiation is achieved through simplicity, consistency, and a clear visual personality.

An effective logo allows a company to carve out its own distinct visual space in the consumer’s mind.

Facilitate Connection

The third objective is to help forge a connection between the company and its audience.

People do not merely remember brands; they also develop emotional associations, experiences, and perceptions surrounding them. A well-designed logo can serve as a visual meeting point between a company and its customers.

Over time, that symbol can become linked to positive experiences, trust, quality of service, or even significant moments in a person’s life.

For this reason, the best logos tend to be simple, easily recognizable, and versatile enough to work across various sizes and media.

When a brand succeeds in building a lasting relationship with its customers, the logo acts as a visual bridge that facilitates that connection.

What a Logo Does Not Do

It is also important to understand what a logo was *not* designed to do.

A logo should not:

Solve sales problems.
Replace a marketing strategy.
Correct deficiencies in customer service.
Compensate for a poor corporate reputation.
Generate trust on its own.

These responsibilities belong to branding, marketing, communications, and business management. Therefore, before investing in a redesign, it is advisable to analyze whether the problem truly lies in the visual identity or in other aspects of the company.

A Common Mistake in Brand Renewal Processes

Frequently, when a marketing or design agency or professional joins a company, they propose a new design—or a logo redesign—as a signal of change.

I believe this should not be the first initiative undertaken by new management. While it is true that many logos suffer from basic design flaws, it is equally true that—before altering an element that may have accompanied the organization for years—it is crucial to determine whether a visual identity problem actually exists, or if the challenges are instead related to business strategy, market positioning, or brand communication.

Changing a logo simply because the designer or the new creative team dislikes it can mean forfeiting years of recognition, market positioning, and visual consistency that the company has worked to build.

In my experience, a new logo rarely resolves a company’s underlying problems. Instead, better results are typically achieved by correcting basic design errors, establishing brand usage guidelines, and standardizing the application of the visual identity across all customer touchpoints.

Conclusion

The world’s best logos are not necessarily the most complex or the most modern ones. Rather, they are the ones that effectively fulfill their intended function.

When we grasp the true objectives of a logo, we understand that its primary mission is to identify, differentiate, and facilitate a connection between people and a brand.

Everything else depends on a much broader strategy—one that encompasses branding, marketing, communication, and customer experience.

A logo is a fundamental piece of the puzzle, but it is never the puzzle in its entirety.

The short answer is an uncomfortable one for those holding extreme views: the profession is neither dead nor has it remained unchanged. Graphic design hasn’t vanished… it has mutated.

But now, there is a new ingredient in the equation: the total democratization of graphic design.

The Democratization of Design: Power for All, Judgment for Few

One of the most visible effects of AI-powered graphic design is that anyone can create visual assets in a matter of minutes. Entrepreneurs, small businesses, and personal projects are turning to free or low-cost tools to generate logos, social media posts, and visual materials without having to rely on a professional designer.

This sounds like a positive revolution—and, in part, it is. However, it also introduces a silent problem: design without discernment.

Artificial intelligence does not create anything truly new—much less anything unique. AI interprets instructions—which are often poorly phrased—draws references from multiple sources, analyzes common patterns, and delivers a result that is typically a composite of what already exists.

Knowing how to use Canva or ChatGPT does not make you a graphic designer. Designing is not about “making something pretty.” It is about building identity, communication, coherence, and differentiation. When everyone uses the same tools, the results inevitably begin to look alike.

The Real Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Design

AI tools have democratized visual production with impressive speed. They allow for the creation of pieces in seconds—something that previously took hours or days.

But herein lies a significant rift.

AI does not interpret deep cultural contexts; it does not understand the emotional weight of a brand or the strategic decisions underpinning a design. Nor does it know how to read a client or accurately interpret their needs. It functions merely as a rapid assembler of existing references.

It produces…, but it does not comprehend.

Graphic Design with AI: Tool vs. Replacement

Artificial intelligence does not eliminate the designer—but it *does* eliminate the designer who fails to evolve. It automates repetitive tasks and accelerates processes, but it does not replace decision-making, judgment, originality, or human experience.

Today, true value lies in:

Interpreting the client
Constructing a visual narrative
Designing with intent

The Problem with AI-Generated Logos and Trademark Registration

For entrepreneurs seeking to create their own brand—one that is supposedly “original thanks to AI”—logos generated by artificial intelligence present a significant legal hurdle: in most cases, they cannot be registered as trademarks due to a lack of clear human authorship.

This applies not only to images but also to text, code, and other automatically generated content.

Crafting a good prompt does not make you a creator. It merely makes you someone who knows how to give better instructions to a tool. In many instances, the resulting output remains unregistrable.

Photography, Resolution, and the Technical Limits of AI

Nevertheless, artificial intelligence offers useful solutions for both professional designers and non-specialists alike. For instance, it enables rapid image enhancement: restoring old photos, correcting blurriness, or removing backgrounds. This proves ideal for web content or for clients working with limited budgets. However, there are significant technical limitations:

Low resolution in many cases
Unsuitable for professional printing (300 dpi)
Issues with large-format printing
Text errors
Inaccurate anatomical details (such as unrealistic hands)
Visual inconsistencies between versions
Lack of vector files

Personal Note: When Technology Was Supposed to “Replace Everything”

Based on my experience as a graphic designer—having lived through the transition from analog to digital design—this is not a new phenomenon.

As early as 1986, there was talk that computer graphics would replace traditional design. It didn’t happen.

What *did* happen was that the designers who failed to adapt to this new tool vanished from the market.

To adapt is to survive. For today’s graphic design professionals, continuous training is no longer optional; it is a necessity in an increasingly competitive market.

AI is not a fad. It is here to stay. If a designer is unable to utilize it as a tool, they will be left behind.

And if an entrepreneur fails to grasp that AI requires human judgment and experience to generate real value, their project is also at risk.

Possessing a good hammer is not what matters. What matters is knowing how to use it—and exactly where to strike.

There is something deeply human about wanting to look… and something equally human about deciding what should not be seen. Art and politics in exhibitions is not just a matter of museums or galleries; it is an ongoing tension between creation and control. Throughout history, public institutions—often tied to political power—have acted as guardians of taste, discourse, and, at times, collective morality.

Within this delicate balance, an unavoidable question emerges: is art displayed to express, or to show society what a small group believes is correct?

When the museum becomes a filter of power

Let’s take a brief historical look. The Museo del Prado stands as a paradigmatic case. Born under the patronage of the Spanish crown, this museum was conceived not only as an exhibition space, but as a reflection of what those in power considered worthy of being seen.

Within its walls lives one of the most compelling stories of artistic censorship: The Nude Maja and its counterpart, The Clothed Maja, both by Francisco de Goya.

The former, a direct nude without mythological or religious justification, was for many years confined to private spaces or restricted access. This was not merely an aesthetic issue; it was a political and moral discomfort. At a time when nudity was only accepted if disguised as classical allegory, this work broke the unspoken agreement between art and decorum.

It is said that the figure portrayed may have been the lover of an influential Spanish politician, adding another layer of social tension. The controversy reached such a level that the Spanish Inquisition questioned Goya to clarify the nature of the painting.

Here, art was not just an image. It was suspicion. It was evidence.

Art and Politics as an ideological tool in exhibitions

History does not stop in Spain. During the regime of Francisco Franco, many artistic expressions were carefully filtered. Anything that did not align with the official narrative simply had no place in the public sphere.

But if there is a case where art was systematically controlled, it is that of Adolf Hitler during World War II. In the Third Reich, art was used as a tool of propaganda.

Entire movements were labeled “degenerate,” and thousands of works were removed, stored, or destroyed. At the same time, a specific aesthetic was promoted—one that emphasized strength, purity, and order.

In this context, Art and Politics ceases to be a curatorial discussion and becomes a mechanism of cultural control.

The question that arises is unsettling: if we only see what power allows, to what extent is our perception of art truly free?

Contemporary censorship: more subtle, just as present

One might think these practices belong to the past. However, today censorship takes on more subtle, almost bureaucratic forms—what we often refer to as politically correct language.

As a visual artist, it is common to encounter open calls that clearly specify which themes will not be accepted. In many exhibitions sponsored by local governments, city councils, or public institutions, nudity—even in its most subtle form—is automatically excluded.

A photographer once told me that an image of a Yanomami Indigenous girl had to be reworked because she was partially nude, and the organizers would not accept it.

The same happens with works addressing contemporary geopolitical conflicts. Topics related to current wars or explicit positions are often rejected to avoid tension or controversy.

Here, censorship is not always explicit. Sometimes it appears as “responsible curation.” Other times, as a way to avoid collective discomfort.

And yet, the result is the same: there are works that never get to be seen.

The political vision shaping institutional art

The intervention of political power in contemporary cultural institutions continues to reopen this debate. In the United States, recent discussions around the Smithsonian have suggested redefining content considered divisive, prioritizing narratives aligned with a particular vision of national history shaped by political leadership.

These tensions have raised concerns about the academic and artistic independence of cultural institutions.

If political power decides what is displayed and what is hidden, art stops being a mirror of reality and becomes a tool of control.

Art as an uncomfortable mirror of its time

Despite everything, art persists.

Today, many Latin American artists in the United States explore themes of immigration, identity, and belonging. Their work does not only tell personal stories—it engages directly with the social and political context that surrounds them.

As a reflection of the world, the artist captures both the light and the shadows of our society. Art remains a mirror of our present, but it is not always a comfortable one.

And perhaps that is precisely where its greatest value lies.

Art and Politics and the direct influence of power on culture

When power takes control of culture, art stops being a mirror of humanity and becomes the loudspeaker of a regime. As artists, we witness how this influence suffocates creativity in three key ways:

Aesthetic control: In highly controlled systems, only art that glorifies the state is allowed, erasing individual vision.
Institutions as showcases: Museums cease to be spaces for dialogue and become platforms for ideological validation.
Silenced generations: Artists grow under pressure or in exile, losing the freedom to experiment.

A museum that offers only imposed certainties is, in reality, a monument to silence.

Art and Politics: an open reflection

Art and Politics in exhibitions is not in conflict with a simple solution. Censorship, in certain contexts, may respond to real needs of social coexistence. Not every space is prepared for every discourse.

But it is also true that limiting what is shown inevitably limits what is thought.

When a work is not exhibited, it does not disappear. It remains silent. Waiting.

And within that silence, perhaps lies one of the most important questions any society can ask itself:

What are we choosing not to see… and why?

Art reveals emotions, but it also reflects the history, social tensions, and ideas of its time.

The concept of art in social context reminds us that artworks never exist in isolation. Every painting, sculpture, or visual image emerges within a specific historical moment shaped by political tensions, cultural change, and collective concerns.

Artists, consciously or unconsciously, become visual chroniclers of their time. Their work may represent everyday life, denounce injustice, reflect social anxieties, or even anticipate historical change. For this reason, studying art is not only about aesthetics or technique, but also about understanding the society that produced it.

Throughout history, many works of art have become visual documents that help us understand the social climate of a particular era. This also allows us to recognize the artistic value of these works and understand why they continue to resonate across generations.

Pablo Picasso, El Guernica

Art in Social Context in Art History

One of the most powerful examples of art in social context is the famous mural Guernica by Pablo Picasso.

This monumental painting was created as a response to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War in 1937.

Rather than depicting the event literally, Picasso constructed a symbolic language filled with fragmented figures, agonizing animals, and broken bodies. The wounded horse, the impassive bull, the use of gray tones (reflecting the black-and-white news images of the time), and the mothers crying while holding their dead children become visual metaphors for the horror of war.

The painting is not simply a historical record. It is a universal condemnation of violence and destruction.

Collective Dreams and Fears in Surrealism

Before the Second World War, many European artists sensed the political tension spreading across the continent.

One of them was Salvador Dalí, who in works such as Soft Construction with Boiled Beans (Premonition of Civil War) explored disturbing visions related to violence and self-destruction.

In this painting, a monstrous body appears to tear itself apart. Its twisted anatomy suggests a society destroying itself from within. Although surrealism uses dreamlike imagery, the underlying theme reflects the fears that many European intellectuals felt as political conflict intensified.

In this sense, surrealism demonstrates how the collective unconscious can reveal the anxieties of an entire society.

Everyday Life in the Baroque

The painter Caravaggio brought art in social context to a radical level during the seventeenth century.

In works such as The Fortune Teller, the artist depicts a seemingly simple scene: a young gypsy woman reads the fortune of a nobleman. Yet in a subtle gesture, she discreetly removes a ring from his finger.

The painting captures a typical moment from Roman street life, revealing both innocence and cunning within social interactions.

Something similar occurs in The Cardsharps, where two tricksters deceive a young aristocrat during a card game.

These scenes are not mere anecdotes. They are psychological studies of society at the time.

Caravaggio was also criticized for portraying saints with dirty feet, rough hands, and the faces of ordinary people. He intended to bring the sacred closer to the everyday reality of the public.

The Arnolfini Portrait and the Fashion of an Era

Jan van Eyck’s The Arnolfini Portrait is another remarkable example of art in social context.

At first glance, the painting appears to be a simple portrait of a wealthy couple. However, the work reveals far more. The luxurious fabrics, the elaborate clothing, the detailed interior, and the symbolic objects within the room all reflect the social status, fashion, and material culture of fifteenth-century Europe.

The painting functions almost like a visual record of wealth, lifestyle, and social identity.

In many ways, one could compare it to the carefully staged photographs of luxury homes and fashion lifestyles that appear today on social media platforms such as Instagram.

Cultural Identity in American Art

Another emblematic example appears in the painting American Gothic by Grant Wood.

The image portrays two rural figures standing in front of a farmhouse and looking directly at the viewer. Beyond the portrait itself, the painting captures the spirit of rural America during the Great Depression.

The work reflects values such as hard work, tradition, and cultural resilience during difficult economic times.

Art, War, and Historical Memory

The Spanish painter Francisco Goya portrayed the horrors of war in works such as The Third of May 1808.

The scene shows an execution during Napoleon’s invasion of Spain. The intense light illuminating the victims contrasts with the darkness surrounding the soldiers, transforming the painting into a powerful denunciation of violence and authoritarian power.

Through images like this, art becomes a visual memory of history.

Mexican Muralism and Latin American Social Identity

Art in social context found a particularly powerful expression in twentieth-century Latin American art, especially in the Mexican muralist movement.

After the Mexican Revolution, the government promoted cultural programs intended to build a national identity through public art.

One of the most influential artists was Diego Rivera, husband of Frida Kahlo. His murals depicted workers, farmers, and Indigenous communities while narrating Mexican history from a social perspective.

Another key artist was David Alfaro Siqueiros, whose monumental compositions expressed revolutionary energy and social struggle.

Both artists believed that art should be accessible to the public and should reflect the social aspirations of their time. Many of these ideas were influenced by revolutionary political movements that promised a more just society. With historical distance, we know that many of those expectations were deeply utopian. Nevertheless, this does not diminish the artistic or documentary value of these works.

Other Voices in Latin American Art

Latin American art has explored art in social context from many different perspectives.

Colombian artist Fernando Botero used exaggerated, voluminous figures to critique political power, violence, and social inequality in Latin America.

Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral developed a visual language that sought to define a uniquely Latin American identity, blending European modernism with local cultural imagery.

Both artists demonstrate how Latin American art has reflected deeply on issues of identity, culture, and power.

Contemporary Art and New Interpretations

Today, many contemporary artists continue to explore art in social context, reinterpreting cultural symbols, traditions, and personal experiences.

Venezuelan artists such as Roger Marí Álvarez explore these themes through political critique, reflecting the profound social transformations taking place in Venezuela.

Similarly, Edo Sanabria, through his project Crónica Patria Pop, revisits the imagery of Venezuelan popular culture as a way of preserving collective memory and recalling the country that once existed.

My work as a contemporary artist, Carlos Apitz, also engages with this reflective tradition. My paintings explore color, symbolism, and the reinterpretation of cultural imagery within a contemporary visual language.

Sometimes my work approaches these themes through subtle irony, sometimes through nostalgia. I often reference pop culture from Venezuela and the United States, as well as icons that represent specific moments in time and the societies that shaped them.

Many artworks admired today were rejected or misunderstood when they first appeared.

Art that challenges established values often seems uncomfortable or radical to its own era. Yet over time, those same works frequently become cultural references.

This happens because avant-garde art often detects social change long before society is ready to accept it.

Understanding art in social context means recognising that art is far more than technique or visual beauty.

Every artwork is a silent conversation between the artist and their time. Through symbols, everyday scenes, or imaginative visions, artists reveal the tensions, dreams, and concerns of the societies in which they live.

When we observe a painting, whether historical or contemporary, we are actually witnessing a fragment of human history seen through the eyes of the artist.

Carnival in Miami: A Living Cultural Celebration

In Miami, the carnival tradition thrives every first Saturday and Sunday of March with Carnaval on the Mile, part of the larger Carnaval Miami celebration.

Held in Coral Gables along the iconic Miracle Mile, this festival has been celebrated for over 26 years. It is organized by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana and brings together local and state artists, entrepreneurs, businesses, and live music for two days of community-centered cultural celebration.

One week later, the internationally recognized Calle Ocho Music Festival takes over Little Havana, also organized by Kiwanis Little Havana. This massive event transforms the neighborhood into a vibrant corridor of Latin music, food, and artistic expression, making it one of the largest Hispanic festivals in the United States.

For the past five consecutive years, I have proudly participated in Carnaval on the Mile, and in 2026, I will once again be exhibiting my work. Visitors will find a curated selection of original paintings, fine art prints, and small to medium format works available during the fair.

Recently, I was asked: How does cold weather influence art? It is an interesting question, so with a hot cup of coffee and a warm sweater, I will try to answer from my perspective.

These days, many of us have felt it firsthand. Cold weather has hit strongly across the United States, even in a state that usually lives in permanent summer mode. In North Florida it has already snowed, and in South Florida, in Miami, we have experienced temperatures around 5 °C, in some areas close to freezing. Several people have asked me something very interesting:

“Carlos, how can you paint in this cold? Does cold weather affect the artist?”

The short answer is yes.
The long answer is fascinating.

Today I want to explore this from two professional lenses that rarely converse, but should: the art curator and the museum conservator–restorer. Cold weather influences both artistic inspiration and the physical survival of an artwork. Understanding how cold weather affects art helps us better value creative processes and art conservation.

Cold Weather as a Creative Trigger

Weather is not just a meteorological background. It is an emotional atmosphere. It changes the light, the rhythm of the body, memory, and the way we look at the world.

Cold weather transforms visual perception:

Light becomes more oblique
Colors shift toward cooler tones
Shadows grow longer
The silence of the landscape feels denser

Historically, many artists have translated winter and cold weather into visual language:

Claude Monet painted snowy landscapes where snow is not white but a symphony of violets, blues, and grays. Cold weather becomes a study of light.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder showed winter scenes where humans appear small within frozen landscapes, reminding us of our fragility in nature.
Caspar David Friedrich used cold, desolate landscapes to speak about introspection, solitude, and spirituality.
In the United States, 19th- and 20th-century landscape artists captured rural winters where cold weather was not decoration, but an emotional protagonist.

Winter invites interiority. Fewer distractions, more reflection. The body gathers inward, and the mind travels deeper. Many artists feel that in cold weather, creation becomes more contemplative, symbolic, and introspective.

So when someone asks how to paint in cold weather, the answer is also this: cold does not block creativity, it transforms creative energy. It changes the pulse of the artwork.

Cold Weather Does Not Only Inspire, but it also deteriorates

Here we move from the soul of the artwork to its physical body.

A painting is not just an image. It is a system of materials:

Canvas
Ground layer
Paint layers
Varnish

Each reacts differently to temperature and humidity, especially during periods of cold weather or sudden environmental changes.

The Silent Enemy: Sudden Changes

During cold weather, the air is often drier. When temperatures rise, humidity can increase. This back and forth creates microscopic movements:

The canvas expands and contracts
Oil paint reacts at a different rate
Varnish ages and becomes more rigid

Result: internal tensions that affect art conservation.

This is where we see something very common in museums and collections:

Craquelure (Cracking of the Paint Surface)

That pattern of small cracks that looks like a network across the surface is not always just age. It is often the result of:

Temperature changes
Humidity fluctuations
Inadequate storage

The canvas and paint layer do not expand or contract at the same speed. This difference creates microfractures. Over time, paint can lift, detach, or lose stability, especially when artworks are exposed to cold weather without proper environmental control.

Practical Tips to Care for Artworks in Cold Weather

From a museum conservation perspective, these are golden rules to protect paintings and improve art conservation:

1. Avoid Sudden Temperature Changes

Do not place artworks near:

Windows with direct sunlight
Strong air conditioning
Heaters
Kitchens or bathrooms

2. Control Humidity

Ideally between 45% and 55%.
Very dry environments dehydrate materials. Very humid spaces promote mold and deformation, especially during cold weather.

3. Do Not Store Paintings in Garages or Attics

These areas have large thermal variations. They are bad roommates for art.

4. Use Quality Stretchers and Materials

From the artist’s point of view, choosing good canvases, grounds, and stable techniques is a long-term conservation decision, especially if the artwork will live in environments with cold weather.

5. Handle with Care

Cold weather can make some materials more fragile. Avoid touching the painted surface directly.

The Artist Between Climate, Material, and Idea

Here, both perspectives meet.

Cold weather influences:

✔️ Light and color palette
✔️ Creative rhythm
✔️ How artists must think about the materials they use

An artist does not only create images. They make decisions that determine whether an artwork will live 10 years or 200.
