José Martí, a Cuban writer, journalist, philosopher, poet, and politician, serves as the inspiration for this work, embodying the spirit of Cuba’s emancipation.

The choice of medium, subject matter and style is motivated by the lack of high-quality photographs of Martí. Angel Falls – Canaima or Salto Angel – Canaima is one of the iconic landscapes of Venezuela, located in the south of Venezuela in an area known as «El Maziso Guayanes». Angel Falls is the «Tepuy» with the highest waterfall in the world.

Carlos Apitz visited this place in 1985 and remembers the visual impact it had on him. He painted this landscape using the typical colors of his country in a version that reflected his vision.

I have always liked going to the beaches of Miami Beach, the color of the sea and the sky and the colorful lifeguard houses with very striking designs have always been something striking about the place that has always attracted me. I wanted to mix a little impressionism with pop art, capturing the colors of the moment in quick strokes with one of the typical lifeguard houses.

Speed Racer (Meteoro in Spanish) was a very popular Japanese cartoon or anime series in the 70s, it quickly became a classic. Meteoro and his car Mach 5, is an action figure that all car racing lovers recognize. I decided to paint Speed Racer in its classic colors but with quick brush strokes and use collage and other elements to give it a special touch. In those quick brush strokes, I drew the figure of the character in black acrylic with great detail to give it the final touch in the Carlos Apitz POP Art style.

Avila Gradiante is a printed reproduction on canvas of an original painting by Carlos Apitz with the same name. Each impression is intervened manually; there are never two exactly alike. The graphic elements, lines, and other elements are placed by hand in each piece, to be later varnished, giving protection and enhancing all the colours.
It is printed in two sizes, 16 x 40 inches and 20 x 60 inches, one inch deep, which is hand-painted.

About the style
Avila Gradiante, the style of using «various times» in paintings with mountainous landscapes is an original creation of Carlos Apitz and is typical in many of his works.
It consists of dividing the landscape at different times of the day (basically morning, afternoon, and night) and studying how the colours of the landscape change during these periods; and then interpreting them on a horizontal or elongated canvas. Then place synthetic, graphic, or floral elements.
